How to Restrict Background Data on your Android Phone

When you enable data connection on your phone, then the background applications also use it to synchronize their data and this can consume a lot of your bandwidth. To reduce it, you can enable background data restriction in the settings menu.

Android Lollipop and Marshmallow

  1. Go to Settings > Data Usage.
  2. Now tap on Options and then select Restrict background data (This will restrict data usage of all the apps).
  3. In the Data Usage Settings, you can see how much data any app has consumed and you can also individually select a app and disable the background data usage for it (You can set the restriction mode to a Cellular or a Wi-Fi network).

Android Nougat

In Android Nougat you have to manually disable data usage for each application or you can use the Data Saver mode.

  1. Go to Settings > Data Usage.
  2. Now tap on Mobile data usage.Disable background data
  3. You will now see a list of all the apps along with their data usage. You can individually select an app and disable the background data usage for it.

If you are a MIUI user then you can find the background data usage configuration in settings menu.

You can revert these settings whenever you want. This can also help you to make data usage rules for certain apps.
