How to Delete Files and Folders Which Require Administrator Permission in Windows

Many of you might have faced this issue after installing a new operating system or if you have changed your user account name. In case you have installed a new OS then you can notice that the old files are hard to delete and you can’t even move them without changing the permissions of that folder. There are many ways that can help you remove these files and folders. And the one that we are going to talk about is the simplest among all.This file requires an administrative privilege

You might have used Disk Cleanup to remove old/temporary files from your computer but now let us tell you have to use it to remove these stubborn files.

Make sure you know what you are deleting or you can end up with a corrupted Windows installation.

  1. Create a Windows.old folder in the drive where the file is located (For example if you file is located in D: then your folder location should be D:\windows.old). windows.old folder
  2. Now move the file that you want to delete into Windows.old folder (If you can’t move the files then you have to gain the permission for it).
  3. Then go to properties of that drive (In our case it is D drive).Drive properties
  4. Here start the Disk Cleanup. After the initial scanning click on “Clean up System files”.Disk CleanupCleanup system files
  5. It will now detect old Windows Installation files. Select it and then click on OK (The files that you have copied in Windows.old folder will be deleted).Old Windows installation files

Note: If you already have a Windows.old folder in your drive, then it may contain some old installation files that can help you to restore your previous Windows installation. If you clean up this once, then you may not be able to restore your previous installation.

The other way to delete these files is change the administrator for the same. So that you can get write permission for it.  You can also use command prompt to delete this files but you need to run it as an administrator for this purpose.
