MIUI – Why to Choose it and Why to avoid it

There are many custom ROMs out there but MIUI has been liked by many mobile phone customers. We have seen MIUI growing exponentially over the past few years and why not MIUI offers more customization than the stock Android. But some users still prefer stock Android ROM which we have seen in many phones from Motorola and Google’s own Nexus and Pixel devices.

MIUI has its own benefits

Themes – If you have visited MIUI forum you can see a lot of theme posts, even these themes are updated depending on their creator. Its fun to see a new version of your phone after applying a new theme. These themes can change your phone’s entire look from icons to how its notification panel and quick settings look.

Customizations – when it comes to customizations there are many options in MIUI which can keep you entertained and make your mobile more accessible to you. Some of these are Double tap to wake, Three finger screenshot, Contrast Control, Customize LED notification, Connection Speed in Status Bar etc.

The Drawback

A lot of Bloat – Some of the apps which you don’t want, cannot be disabled or removed.

The Status Bar Signal Icons doesn’t Go Dark on particular apps like Instagram, Twitter, Nova Launcher, Google Calender, Google Allo etc. However, Xiaomi Inc. has said that a new update will be rolled out to fix this issue.

Still Using Old File System – MIUI is still using the old file system ext4 while other companies has moved to faster file systems such as f2fs. Many companies such as Motorola has started using f2fs file system which seems to be more faster than the ext4. The new MIUI 9 is stated to have a new file system but currently we don’t have any information on that.

MIUI 9 around the corner

While the MIUI 9 China beta ROM is around the corner, the Nougat update with MIUI 8 will be soon roll out to some phones. MIUI 9 Global ROM is expected to reach the smart phones in Q4 2017. While the old Xiaomi phone will struggle to get it, the Mi 6, Redmi Note 4(625SD) will be the first phones to be updated. Xiaomi will try address all the issues from the MIUI 8 in MIUI 9.
